CATE is a curriculum development
programme that has been implemented at The
Ridgeway School, Swindon , since January 1997.
It has been developed for intervention at
KS3 and is influenced by CASE and by the Somerset
Thinking Skills Project. The main aim of the
programme is to both raise pupil achievement
and general thinking via technology, and to
help teachers become more effective. |
| |
|
| |
The intervention lessons
are more pupil–oriented and discussion
based with the emphasis being on the teacher
to facilitate pupils in their thinking –
by encouraging questioning, hypothesizing,
discussions and explaining things to one another.
The problems that are set are mental problems,
designed to help year seven and eight students
develop their thinking and reasoning skills,
so that they are in a much stronger position
to solve more difficult problems that they
may well encounter later in the school curriculum. |

We are know waiting to see
if their key stage 3 SATs results, and later
on GCS’s, will show the benefits of
this work. In the meantime, the Technology
team has noted improvements in pupils’
communication and listening skills and in
their teamwork, as well as quite significant
changes in the ‘culture because staff
use the techniques in all lessons. |
