To develop accelerated learning units, based primarily on CAME (Cognitive Accelerated Maths Education) methodology, for lower ability KS3 and KS4 pupils

School: Castleview School
Fellow: Sue Kerridge
Email: susan.kerridge@durham.ac.uk

  Description:

‘The brain connects information left to right, front to back and this process can be encouraged deliberately by talking about the experience as you do it. Learners who describe what they are doing aloud as they do it; who reflect on their engagement with the task and their changing motivation; who speculate and hypothesise, achieve dramatically improved results.’ Win Wenger, 1995 (see www.winwenger.com)

In the project I will develop accelerated learning units, based primarily on the C.A.M.E. (Cognitive Accelerated Maths Education) methodology, for lower ability KS3 & KS4 pupils. This involved the development of initially 4 topics, one in each of the main strands; Number, Algebra, Shape and Space and Data Handling.

An INSET day with the maths staff at Castleview School took place in September 2003. After feedback from staff the units will be refined and trialled via the ITT programme within the county. Finally analysis of SATS and GCSE results for the trialled classes and the control groups (no trial) will be undertaken, comparing their actual and predicted results against each other.

  Impact on Pupils

There were two groups on which my project impacts:

school pupils, and
ITT students

The school pupils in my groups receiving accelerated learning are now showing much improved analytical skills and can ‘think outside the box’. This is demonstrated by their Dec 2003 exam results. For example of my Y7 class who were working at level 3 or below (SATS results), 38% gained over 70% in their exam (a level 3 – 5 paper.

In Oct 2003 I delivered INSET on Accelerated Learning and CAME modules to the ITT students at the University of Sunderland. The session was very well received and a number of the ITT students have asked if I would support them in their use of Accelerated Learning during their long teaching practice.

  Personal Development

In Sept 2003 I delivered whole school INSET on Accelerated Learning. I began my Doctorate in Education at the University of Durham in Sept 2003, and have completed the first 3 modules on education policy, assessment and indicator systems. My Ed.D. is due for completion in 2009.

I gave a presentation on the Gatsby Fellowships at Durham University to the post-grad students.

In Nov 2003 I successfully completed the approval process to be an Initial Teaching Training (ITT) mentor at the University of Sunderland. Subsequently, I mentored the ITT Maths student at my current school (Castleview) who went on to successfully complete this section of his teacher training.

  Timeline and Milestones

Taking into consideration the NNS timing of topics and the implication for teaching and learning, the accelerated units will be developed on the following timetable:

  Sept–Oct 2003:
Initial development of the Units and posters: Number, Algebra, Shape and Space, Data Handling.

  Oct 2003:
  Inset Day at Castleview.
Attended the education policy module of my doctorate of education.

  Nov 2003:
  Review procedure / feedback.
Visit to Sunderland University for presentation and feedback on Units and posters.
Completed the ITT mentor training at Sunderland University.

  Nov-Dec 2003:
Rewrite of Units and posters: Number, Algebra, Shape and Space, Data Handling.

  Jan 2004:
Visit to Sunderland University re implementation of the Units into the Teacher Training Programme in time for the “long” teaching practice.
Attended the Assessment module of my doctorate.
Presentation to Durham post-grads re the Gatsby fellowships and programme in general.

  Autumn 2004:
Submission of paper to an academic journal is to take place in conjunction with one of my supervisors at Durham University. The paper is currently being written.

Please note that due to circumstances I have had to defer the work which was to be done from January 2004 to August 2004. I will start this part of my fellowship again in September 2004.
