Virtual Teaching Resource

University: Nottingham Trent University
Fellow: Allen Bower

Overview:

The school situation is often frantic and curricula development is heavily reliant upon individual teachers having the enthusiasm and dedication to provide pupil activities, which not only teach the statutory requirements of the national curriculum, but also engage pupils in a stimulating, lively activity and environment in which they can ‘achieve’ at their own level.

It is therefore apparent that curricula resources, be they book or web based, do not often provide a full enough solution in finding suitable D&T activities. Sadly, many D&T departments will continue using activities that are long outdated simply because of time, economic constraints and workload. (1)

Also the busy teacher often finds that they have to spend too much time engaging in the demonstration or explanation of processes and techniques, to individuals or small groups, leaving the rest of the class much to their own devices. This may be acceptable in some situations – it is surely not desirable. (2)

  Aims:

To establish an interactive Virtual Teaching Resource using DVD or Web based Media. There is a possibility that these may need to interact.

The intention is to develop two main themes:

Curriculum solutions – appropriate to Key Stage 3 and 4 (1)
Bite sized demonstrations – processes and techniques (2)

What I have done, achieved/found out so far:

My project is essentially to revolve around PGCE trainee activity at Nottingham Trent University.
The Subject Application Study element is relevant to the context in (1) above and the brief presented to them is as follows:

“You are required to develop a Design and Make Task (DMT) that is appropriate to late Key Stage 3 (Y9) or early Key Stage 4 (Y10).

This is to be recorded on DVD media in which you will make a brief presentation of your chosen topic outlining the knowledge, skills and understanding gained through this activity.”

There are 31 trainees, 27 of these are engaged in Product Design, Materials Technology, and Systems and Control, whilst 4 are involved in Textiles and some elements of Food Technology.

Trainees only have around 12 weeks in University to raise their knowledge, understanding, and in particular practical skill and process mastery. They are also required to develop capabilities in curriculum development and not least teaching methodology and delivery.

I have therefore established this brief such that it gives trainees access to a beginning in curriculum development and through developing their own practical solution will develop new skills and techniques.

At the end of February there will therefore be a combination of 31 Key Stage 3/4 Design and Make assignments.

The first part of my project will therefore be to record their individual projects on DVD media and will include the following:

  Coursework

A scheme of work as exemplified by the example given to you and if designed appropriately it could include the basic outline weekly lesson objectives.
Basic outline of weekly lesson objectives (8 to 10 weeks only)
Project booklet – if appropriate/Or
Suitable handouts
Hardware example of a possible outcome – this is most important in gaining practical skills and knowledge – see weighting in assessment section.
List of suppliers - Component and Material list.
Group evaluations

  Presentation requirements (to be videoed)

You will be required to personally present your work in which you:

Set the context for the activity
Outline the curricula aims – learning outcomes
Clearly demonstrate how you achieved your example solution

I feel that this situation should be exploited as it provides an opportunity for the sharing of 31 different activities.

  Outlining next steps:

I have just ordered a digital camcorder with appropriate software to produce a DVD, which will contain the trainee work outlined above. I am on a steep learning curve if a quality DVD is to be produced!

All trainees will then receive their own copy of the DVD and will therefore have 31 projects which they can use in their individual situations whether that be in the next teaching practice or indeed when they attend interview and their subsequent first teaching post.

As a follow on to this perhaps three most suitable trainee outcomes will be chosen, certainly one from textiles, and I will work closely with these to produce a more high quality presentation. The intention of which will be to meet the two original aims of the project. An attempt will be made to produce bite-sized demonstrations of processes and techniques within this.

The eventual intention will be to share these resources more widely on the NTU website and perhaps as part of the collaboration established with the Technology Enhancement Programme (TEP).

  Evaluation:

Intend to evaluate impact on pupil and teacher engagement with the intended outcome by taking the media to a range of schools where they have agreed to help in this. A suitable feedback system will be established.
