Virtual Teaching Resource

Final Report

  Aims:

To establish an interactive Virtual Teaching Resource using DVD or Web based Media. There is a possibility that these may need to interact.

The intention is to develop two main themes:

Curriculum solutions – appropriate to Key Stage 3 and 4 (1)
Bite sized demonstrations – processes and techniques (2)

Research and requirements to reach the above aims:

Camcorder This essentially needs to be digital such that the format is compatible with editing software. Many tried before decision was made.
Editing Software Four packages evaluated. Sonic Moviemaker; Ulead DVD Workshop; Sony Vegas Movie Studio; Pinnacle Studio 9 plus.
DVD Authoring Three packages evaluated. Pinnacle Studio 9; Sonic MyDVD; Sony Vegas DVD Architect Studio.

  Results of research:

Camcorder This was reasonably easy to achieve after reading reviews and visiting local camera outlets. Panasonic NVS120 chosen.
Editing Software A fairly lengthy and complex task to work out merits and demerits. As a novice editor I had to make judgements based on reviews and personal observations – very interesting and steep learning curve. Pinnacle Studio 9 plus chosen for user friendliness and screen layout.
DVD Authoring The title is not self-explanatory. This is used to produce the menu pages you see when first installing a DVD and include moving menu images and navigating buttons. Again a very lengthy procedure of review and trials leading to choice of Sonic MyDVD.

How the aims have been met:

  DVD media production

I have been through an accelerated learning process in mastering the above-mentioned equipment and software. The basic procedure involves taking footage of student presentations, which are imported into the editing software in the form of ‘clips’. The clips are then edited with effects added in the form of transitions, titles, and sound. This is saved in MPEG format and then ‘rendered’ to produce a consolidated format. The next stage involves the organisation of all edited movies into DVD media - essentially forming the end product.

  The original presentation requirements were:

You will be required to personally present your work in which you:

Set the context for the activity
Outline the curricula aims – learning outcomes
Clearly demonstrate how you achieved your example solution

These requirements have been completed and 30 trainee presentations have been edited and are now available in DVD format. See screen shot

A CD ROM has also been produced which contains each of the trainee projects in electronic format such that all work is easily shared and subsequently modified.

How will the final product be presented?

At the time of presentation during June it is hoped that the DVD’s and CDROM media will be available in a presentation case with suitable graphics on the case and on the discs. It is also hoped that the beginning of the second aim will have begun and some evidence will be presented. However I now see this as an extension activity.

How my work is to be disseminated:

Many who are involved in our Design and Technology community have viewed some early and ongoing work. Their comments have revealed that there is a sincere need for this media to be available through a shared resource. TEP have requested that this material be placed on their website and it will of course appear on the University VLP.

  Has evaluation taken place?

As mentioned above Advisers, Teachers, Students and other professionals have viewed this work and admire the work involved. I have placed copies in a number of schools that are currently making their judgements.

  Where next:

I feel this work should not be just my responsibility but indeed built into ITE schemes such that trainees become proficient such that pupil virtual media will be possible.

Each year there will be some 40 or so new projects that will emerge as a shared resource.

On a personal basis, I have been asked to video key Design and Technology events and provide seminars at regional and national venues.
