Interactive DVD for Pupils and Teachers when involved in Design Project Work

  Aim of project

The objective of this project is to produce an interactive guide for pupils and teachers when undertaking Design Project work. The idea behind the DVD is to produce a piece of software that uses real designers to lead students through the design process. By having real designers commenting on how they tackle the problems associated with their work it is hoped that the mystery of the Design Process will become ever clearer to the students. I have chosen to do this project because as a Design Technology teacher I have become frustrated at the lack of materials that can be used in the classroom to help students understand the design process.

  The project will:

Use the role of designers to identify at which stages they have control and input into a project.
Use British designers and manufacturers to promote the Design Process.
Use designers to launch a new project through the DVD.

  The DVD will:

lead students through the Design Process and through examples show them the different ways in which project work can be presented.
have a variety of possible outcomes and extension tasks on offer to the pupils.
have video clips showing different stages of the design Process.

What I have achieved so far

The objective of this project is to produce an interactive DVD guide for KS4/KS5 pupils and teachers, when involved in Design Project work.

I initially made contact with the Design Museum, Design Council, Nick Crosby of Inflate and James Dyson Foundation. From initial meetings with the Design Council and the Design Museum it was evident that I would have to refine my research considerably. The Design Council were keen to listen extensively to my ideas but were very reluctant to become involved.

Nick Crosby from Inflate was very supportive and encouraging, and took a great deal of time from his schedule to listen to my ideas and provide constructive and focused criticism. His input and suggestion helpful in allowing me to realise what really was achievable.

James Dyson Foundation were very encouraging and provided lots of positive and influential feedback which helped me to really focus in on what I wanted to achieve in this research project. Through conversations with Julia Curry, Education Liaison Officer, and other members of the Dyson team my project was able to become more realistic in some of its objectives.

The James Dyson Foundation has agreed to support the project and its filming. The idea behind the DVD is to produce a piece of software that uses Designers/Manufacturers to lead students through the design process. By using Designers commenting on how they tackle the problems associated with their work, it will show that the Design Process pupils go through, is exactly the same.

The James Dyson Foundation also has agreed to help produce and distribute the DVD through their educational boxes that they send out to schools.

The filming that has been shot was put together with the Design Team and has a very professional look to it. One of the key elements that I wanted The DVD to have was a very easy to navigate system this has been achieved by having a simple white cube that unfolds to reveal the different areas for analysis.

The images that have been shot show the variety of ways that designers work. A key area is using simple card prototyping and before any hard engineering is produced every element is always made in card. Students have found this part particularly enlightening.

I was also keen to make sure that key role models featured in the film. Having young fashion conscious males was easy to do but I wanted to show that women also feature equally in Design and this I believe has been portrayed well.

I have used simple interview techniques to gain the information required. Many of the interviews were taped using a video recorder this allowed reflection and further post analysis of what was actually said.

Dyson have been the most excited by what I have to offer and filming has already taken place. James Dyson features on the DVD and is a fantastic endorsement of what I have been trying to achieve.

Questionnaires have also been used and the results analysed to guide the direction of the project.

I have also been in contact with DATA as a way of promoting the project. DATA have shown some initial interest and arte prepared to run an article but I am in negotiation as to the ‘Pitch’ of the story. They have agreed that it could feature in DATA journal but I am very keen to get it into Designing which targets the group of schools and teacher better than DATA journal

  Personal Reflections

I have found the journey that the project has leaded me on very rewarding and exhilarating. I have met fantastic inspirational individuals who have a real passion and belief for design. I have found that when I have come back from a meeting my own teaching has become more energised and that has to be worthwhile.

I have been fortunate to find a good supporter for my research and by visiting Dyson’s head office in Malmesbury, Wiltshire I have been surprised and encouraged to see that by knocking on doors and sometimes not taking No for an answer results can be achieved. The project has taught me to be confident in my convictions and beliefs in what I am doing and by having good supporting evidence and data everything is achievable.

The filming of the DVD was potentially the area where the project would fail. I was very fortunate to have James Dyson Foundation interested in the project enough for them to be able to offer their expertise in the filming of such a project. My resources would have produced DVD but not to the level I think I have got to currently.

Next Steps- How Will I evaluate the outcomes

By using the DVD as an open teaching tool students can use it at any stage of their coursework to help them identify what they need to improve upon. What I am doing now is circulating the DVD to a variety of schools and colleges along with the questionnaire to gauge their reactions from the research. I hope that the findings will prove that a device such as the DVD will excite and stimulate student’s interest in the Design Process and help them to gravitate towards careers in Design / Engineering.

I have had to make some changes but this has meant that the project will be greatly improved.

DVD to focus on design Engineering of DC11 vacuum cleaner
CD to be included in pack with specialist terms.
Booklet or wallet to have lead article from James Dyson
Results of questionnaire to help support improvements to 2nd DVD version.
