An Accelerated Curriculum for Able Students Who Find Maths Challenging

  So Far:

As of January 2nd 2007 the format is complete. The basic template is made that allows students and teachers to navigate themselves through the whole 2 years of the syllabus. I have also completed the tests that allow students and teachers to identify whether the students preferred learning style is Visual, Audio or Kinaesthetic.

When I started I envisioned inventing lots of material to help students, but upon talking to others, looking through libraries on such literature and going to the internet, I have seen that the material already exists. My task has thus become how to make this material available in an EASY format to students and teachers.

Now I have completed the structure, it is a case of adding to the 4 column with activities that allow the students to progress at a rapid rate.
It is important that the teachers teach the students concepts, not skills. Knowing ‘why’ is more important that ‘how’, nothing can take the place of a teacher knowing his/her charges and their strengths and weaknesses.

As I have worked on this project I now know what must be done. It has helped me focus more on my students, think about what they need to know, but also about my teaching practice.

  Future:

Between now and July I expect to spend a few hours a week planning what my students will do in detail, teach the lesson and then evaluate it before putting it into the final scheme. I will include them in the review and by having student voice included in the evaluation, it should make the process more real.

As of yet I haven’t found any good courses to use the Gatsby money, but the main use I have for it is the Thursday afternoon I have timetabled off to do my fellowship (2K). The remaining £1000, I intend to use in incorporating some IT software, printing, discs and consumables.

The school is part of a consortium, so I plan to share my work with them and then hopefully they will take it on. I have created a monster here, that I cannot contain, my final vision is something that is more that a mere 100 hours of work. It needs shaping, personalising and tailoring. However, I hope that others will see the benefit and will see how students can be developed by it.

Looking to the future, it would be an excellent idea to extend this to KS5, where students can be identified and extended.
