Aims of the project: |
| |
|
| |
The aims of the project I originally
set out to achieve were to create a set of
electronic resources for a picture frame design
and manufacture project within Key stage 3
Design and Technology. The electronic resources
are to be used within the classroom to help
to develop independent learning skills and
also to be available as an e-resource, accessible
at home to support students work at school.
Hopefully it may help to further support students
with sporadic attendance (e.g. travellers)
to complete and understand the practical activity.
The project will hopefully start to address
the shortage of e-learning resources within
the department and can be readily exploited
by teachers, support staff and learners. I
intend to: create a Scheme of Learning; a homework
pack to support the work; create a template
for the project for students to access on a
PC at home or in school which includes video
clips of the practical processes in stages,
health and safety points, and photographs of
the key tools and equipment with the terminology/
names displayed. |

What I have done, achieved and
found out so far |
| |
|
| |
At the end of the summer term I was wonderfully
inspired and a little daunted by the volume
of work I had to undertake to enable me to
achieve my aims! The school had just purchased
a ‘visualiser’ which would help
me to video and edit quickly the processes.
However, after piloting its use during the
summer holidays it’s range of videoing
was not suitable and therefore in October
I purchased a video and started videoing
processes from half term onwards. I had asked
Emma Baker a few questions at the Seminar
in June and she sent me some excellent advice
about editing and organising digital video,
which has been a huge learning curve so far.
I have started editing the clips and have
started to create a template to present these.
I have also had some tuition from a web site
designer. The scheme of learning is being
taught. I also contacted Trish Colley who
kindly sent me a copy of her DVD. |

Changes in the original plan |
| |
|
| |
The original focus was to change the picture
frame Scheme of learning. Due to losing time
in the Key stage 3 curriculum I changed the
project focus to the design and manufacture
of a music box which uses a pine frame construction
and an electronic circuit which makes use
of a programmable chip. I intend to contact
some local companies to video processes on
an industrial scale and also include help
on the programming of the chip using the
Logicator program. |

|
| |
Points of interest, surprise or
difficulty |
| |
|
| |
Videoing and editing – learning
to use the software has been the hardest
challenge so far – using on line tutorials
and getting hold of the correct updates and
compatible software has been a real eye opener
to the huge range of possibilities if time
were no object! |
| |
|
| |
The next steps |
| |
|
| |
Continue to take a few more videos – and
edit.
I need to trial this with my two year 8 classes
who are at different stages of the project,
and also with other staff in the department.
I hope to do this whilst being observed by
a number of different teachers to gain a variety
of feedback, not just within Design Technology
department.
Add this resource to the school department
intranet and school website to trial it there.
Take the resource to a wider audience – LEA
for evaluation
I would like to develop more video support
for our feeder primary school teachers to help
give them the confidence and as a support resource
teaching health and safety during design technology.
Contacting local companies to video processes
on an industrial scale
Include help on the programming of the chip
using the Logicator program within the resource. |

Evaluating the outcomes - impact
on pupil engagement |
| |
|
| |
 |
This term
I am to trial the resource with two year
8 classes and gain feedback from both |
 |
Trials with other design technology teachers
and evaluate and analyse data about pupil
engagement |
 |
Gain feedback from learning
director/ technology director and the teaching
and learning focus group |
 |
Conduct semi structured
interviews with wider audience – parents/
carers, support staff for travelling community |
 |
Seek evaluation form
