Aim |
 |
|
| |
Having studied the area of
underachievement in Design and Technology
as part of an MA dissertation I will aim to
disseminate my findings on the underachievement
of boys to a variety of audiences including
secondary education and higher education institutions,
through conferences and specialist journals.
In addition, I will aim to further explore
the issue of assessment in defining the underachievement
of boys’. |

Description |
| |
|
| |
Boys are currently identified as significantly
underachieving in a variety of subjects and
in particular they have recently become defined
as underachieving in Design and Technology.
The extent of this underachievement is only
just becoming apparent and many boys are now
becoming disenfranchised from the subject. |
| |
|
| |
The issue is however very complex, as a
variety of forces are acting to create this
impression of underachievement and teachers
and organisations have to be very careful
in defining groups of students as underachievers.
The area of assessment is an area that requires
further investigation. |

Outcomes |
| |
|
| |
 |
Presentations will be
given to Design and Technology teacher
training institutions to impact upon
student teachers entering the profession
|
 |
A presentation will be given at the
1999 Data conference to identify education
authorities that would receive in-service
training |
 |
In-service provision provided to a
variety of education authorities |
 |
A summary of my MA
dissertation will be published in the
Design and Technology Association (DATA)
journal. The feasibility of creating
a supporting web sit will also be investigated
|
 |
Further research into assessment issues
in defining the underachievement of
boys will be carried out |
 |
An email address will
operate for co-ordination of information
on the subject |
