Aim |
 |
|
| |
To develop materials to support
teachers in developing children’s skills
in the area of mathematical explanation |
| |
|
| |
Description |
| |
|
| |
The project will include: |
| |
|
| |
 |
A review of the literature
relating to written and oral mathematical
explanation |
 |
Analysis of the types of explanations
that teachers and published resources
currently use to teach maths topics,
and their usefulness in developing children’s
own skills in mathematical explanation
|
 |
Empirical analysis of the effectiveness
of using frameworks for the teaching
of mathematical explanation leading
to the development of draft materials
|
 |
A review in a more academic style,
including details that may be helpful
to other teacher-researchers wishing
to carry out follow-up studies or attempt
to replicate experiments |
|
| |
|
| |
Outcome |
| |
|
| |
 |
A report based on the
literature review |
 |
A teachers’ resource pack containing:
|
| |
- A short set of teachers’ notes |
| |
- Sample lesson plans to illustrate
use of frameworks in class teaching,
group and individual activities |
| |
- A discussion of the technique as
used in practice |
 |
A draft of a paper for submission
to the professional development or academic
literature and a project report containing
a review of the methodology adopted,
details of the evaluations and suggestions
for future studies |
 |
The resource pack will be made available
in draft mode. The pack could be developed
for publication in conventional fashion.
Other aspects of the project will be
disseminated via professional development
and academic journals (if accepted for
publication), reports (via the University
of Hertfordshire and/or the GTEP and
a WWW site |
